Top Tips for Beginners

As a sandbox game, Minecraft accommodates a wide range of playing styles. But let's face it, we could all use some help from time to time.

Chests
Once you've constructed your first shelter, you'll need to start digging into the ground for minerals. Consider building some chests in deeper tunnels. Instead of walking back to the surface every time your inventory fills up, you can simply dump everything in a chest. It also prevents you from losing everything to a surprise creeper or unexpected lava.

Diagonal Digging
Always dig a block away from your current position.

Digging out the block directly above? That can lead to sand or gravel falling on your head and suffocating you. Digging out the block directly below? A quick fall into a cave or lava.

Farming Obsidian
Use a bucket (iron ingots in a V-shape in the 3x3 crafting grid) to bring lava to water or vice versa when creating obsidian blocks. I prefer to carry lava up to the surface. Using underground lava to farm obsidian can make it difficult to remove every block without falling in.

Peaceful
Sometimes, all you want to do is build an amazing structure without a creeper surprise ruining your hard work. Change the difficulty to Peaceful until your structure is complete.

Shelter Protection
Consider building a moat or a wall around your shelter, particularly if you're building in the open on the surface. Walls should be at least 2 blocks in height, and moats should be 2 blocks in height and 2 blocks in width. Moats and walls are a simple way to protect your shelter from mobs without wasting lots of torches.

Shift Key Bridges
Hold the shift key when trying to place a block on an edge. It will keep you from falling to your death when building air bridges.

Surface Mining
Hilly and mountainous maps have surface coal and occasionally surface iron on their sides. It may take some exploring, but surface minerals can be a quick way to find raw materials without having to dig deep into the ground.

Seed for the World Generator: List

Minecraft allows players to type in an alphanumeric code known as a "seed." The seed determines what kind of terrain will be spawned. Spawn location may vary between players, and a seed will not guarantee the exact same spawn location on every use.

To use one of the seeds, simply click on the "Create New World" option and fill in the seed code in the box labeled "Seed for the World Generator." Coordinates were generated using the F3 key at the time of writing.

Seed
404

Minerals
Surface minerals are not available in the spawn zone, but a shallow coal vein can be found under the gravel with some digging.

Wood
Wood is nearby, but not in the spawn zone.

Description
404 is most famous for a surprise located at about x: -24.65, y: 66.62 beneath all of the gravel. Although players generally spawn near the gravel, you may occasionally spawn away from it and need coordinates to find the exact spot. The terrain is primarily grassy areas, sandy beaches, and water.

Seed
-1623774494

Minerals
Surface minerals are nearby once you exit the spawn zone.

Wood
Wood is nearby once you exit the spawn zone.

Description
You will always spawn in a cave. Although you can easily dig your way out, players may need to look up and around their spawn to find the exit. Once you have exited the cave, surface coal and wood is easily available around the spawn zone. The terrain is grassy and hilly.

Seed
2 girls 1 cup

Minerals
Surface coal can be found around the numerous mountains and overhangs.

Wood
Wood is nearby and in the spawn zone.

Description
2 girls 1 cup is a very hilly seed. Numerous mountains, overhangs, and valleys can be found near the spawn zone. Although you will generally spawn at the bottom or on the side of a hill, occasionally the spawn zone is on a wide beach. Walk away from the water to find the mountains. Numerous caves can be found in the entire starting area. I was unable to verify reports of surface lava near the spawn zone.

Seed
abyss

Minerals
No surface minerals are in the spawn zone.

Wood
Wood is nearby, but not in the spawn zone.

Description
Similar to the movie, "abyss" spawns you in a location with massive amounts of water. You'll have to swim to other islands or travel a distance to get to most wood sources.

Seed
diamonds

Minerals
Surface minerals are nearby, but not in the spawn zone.

Wood
Wood is nearby, and in the spawn zone.

Description
This was one of my favorite seeds because it seems to spawn you in the same location every time. There's a small pool of surface lava near the spawn zone, and numerous caves in the area. You can easily find some coal and iron by exploring some of the caves. I frequently was able to tame a wolf within the first day or two of spawning.

Seed
Glacier

Minerals
Surface minerals are nearby, and in some of the spawn zones.

Wood
Wood is nearby, and in some of the spawn zones.

Description
This is one of the better maps for mountainous terrain and surface minerals. There are plenty of cave entrances sprinkled around each of the spawn zones. However, the dark areas seem to spawn a high amount of unfriendly mobs at times.

Seed
iwantamountain

Minerals
Surface coal can be found around the spawn zone's mountain.

Wood
Wood is nearby, but not in the spawn zone.

Description
The spawn zone is typically at the summit or on the side of a grassy mountain. A sandy coastal area is at the bottom of one edge of the spawn zone's mountain. Smaller hills and some caves are nearby. A small cave under one edge of the spawn zone's mountain has exposed lava and nearby water.

Seed

licorice

Minerals
Surface coal is nearby, but not in the spawn zone.

Wood
Wood is nearby and in the spawn zone.

Description
The spawn zone includes plenty of wood and several large coal veins in the side of medium-sized mountains or close to the surface. This seed seems to contain significant numbers of trees.

Seed
tits or gtfo

Minerals
Surface coal and iron are available in some of the nearby caves.

Wood
Wood is nearby, and in the spawn zone.

Description
This seed is one of the few that I've found that places you in or on the edge of a taiga or tundra biome. There are usually some low to medium hills in and around the spawn zone. Accessible minerals can be found in most of the caves. However, wood can be sparse.

Disclaimer
This is by no means a comprehensive list of seeds, and players should experiment with seeds to find their own favorite. Updates will be forthcoming as time allows.
